SHELTER aims to provide both financial and emotional support for the widows, abandoned women, and women in need of rural Andhra Pradesh, India. In the future, SHELTER aims to expand to include a physical shelter for homeless widows.
In efforts to help combat poverty and discrimination, SHELTER’s initial focus is creating sustainable social businesses. Our first project is the manufacturing of low-cost sanitary feminine hygiene products that are then sold to women and girls in surrounding villages. There are many, many possible areas for growth and extension within SHELTER. We would like to offer more employment opportunities for widows and and other destitute women, including expansion of the sanitary napkin project and a buffalo dairy.
We will also reach out into the community by offering education on health, hygiene, and money management. It is our aim to set an example for the community on the treatment of abandoned women and widows.
